Safe Whitening Treatments Recommended by the AACD

At Sherman Oaks Dentists, Dr. Perlaza provides a full array of cosmetic procedures recommended by the AACD. Some of the top causes of tooth discoloration include:

  • Certain types of food and drink, such as coffee, cola, and tea.
  • Poor brushing and flossing habits.
  • Antibiotics and other medications.
  • Disease and trauma.

Safe whitening treatments, utilizing hydrogen peroxide and potassium nitrate, can be done in a few short office appointments.

The Process

Before the first treatment session, you will need to have a regular cleaning done to get rid of plaque and tartar. At your whitening appointment, the cosmetic dentistry team will:

Pull back your gums and administer a dental guard so that only your teeth are exposed.
Your mouth and teeth will be air dried to maximize the effectiveness whitening gel.
The special gel will be applied to the surface of your teeth.

The gel solutions are exceptionally safe for your teeth. The first gel contains a 38% hydrogen peroxide solution to start the whitening process. The second solution contains potassium nitrate and fluoride to strengthen your tooth enamel. Typically, the gel takes about 15 minutes to work. Each session usually takes one to two hours.

In-Office Treatment: Safe in Comparison to Over-the-Counter Alternatives

Dr. Perlaza and the team at Sherman Oaks Dental recommends in-office whitening. Over-the-counter that you purchase at your local grocery store pharmacy can be harmful to your tooth enamel and lead to erosion. Any whitening rinse or toothpaste without an ADA seal may utilize bleaching chemicals that can be harmful to your teeth. It is always recommended that you consult your dentist before using any over-the-counter whitening treatment.
