The holiday season is a great time to spend time with loved ones while spreading holiday cheer through charity work and gift giving. It’s a time to eat, drink, and be merry. But of course, much of that eating and many of the gifts you will receive will involve sweets. Lots and lots of sugary treats. Now, the staff at Sherman Oaks Dentistry would never suggest that our patients completely abstain from all the treats your family, friends, and neighbors gift to you, but we do preach caution. A little indulgence isn’t the end of the world, but take it easy and be selective when picking which sweets to eat. Here is a short list of treats to wary of this holiday season.

Hard Candy or Food

Hard foods are trouble, especially if they are the sugary kind. There’s a reason they call them “jawbreakers.” They can easily chip teeth. And hard candies dissolve slowly, a process that completely saturates your mouth with harmful sugar.

  • Jaw breakers
  • Jolly Ranchers
  • Carmeled Apples

Chewy Candy or Food

You’ll assuredly have a chance to chew on caramel sometime during December. While delicious, sticky and chewy foods and candy embed themselves in your teeth. And sometimes, it’s not easy to dislodge it. Here are some chewy foods to avoid:

  • Gummies
  • Taffy
  • Caramel
  • Bagels
  • Tootsie Rolls
